APOCALYPSE

11 years ago at 6:66 pm, we were supposed to have the apocalypse.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful that the Reverend was wrong.

RIGGITY ROW & GADZOOKS

Figgity Flame on … all those words and more to the team LiveIntent for their new website. It’s bright. It’s engaging. It’s beautiful. And it’s easy-to-understand. It’s … a reflection of all the good times and great people I remember working with for a couple of years.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for that opportunity, and for all you folks who are still there, who did work on this amazing project, and who are doing amazing things moving the company and its brand forward. Awesome job. Awesome, outstanding job. I’m proud to know you.

This website crushes all the things. https://liveintent.com

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BELIEVE?

https://www.nytimes.com/…/youre-not-going-to-change… There’s truth.

There’s us believing what we want to believe. And there are people telling us what we want to hear. Truth has a ridiculously uphill battle to fight. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful … that it’s not giving up the fight?

Give it the five minutes.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful to Kieren McCarthy for sharing this one. Made me crack up. Nice and simple. Why? “Oh, I think you know … “

DAD JOKES FOR DAYS

Apple and Michael Jordan. Two of the greatest of all time for their generations. Two that I was stubbornly critical of early, regretfully delayed embracer of too late, and as a result, I missed the joy of them in their prime. You know something I am never critical of, though? Dad jokes. They crush. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for Apple delivering on them like whoa. Even if their new laptops suck, they dropped the headphone jack a year too early (at least), and my iPhone is buggy and has envy of that Samsung edge-to-edge screen. They will be back. Once Tim Cook starts acting like the right Steve (Jobs, not Ballmer.) Until then, I got a good laugh.

INTERDEPENDENCE

A friend posed the below (a former boss/manager actually, thank you Joan Ochi). The message is powerful and precisely the humility and context we need these days. It reminds me of one of my favorite passages from The Art of Happiness. I feel like sometimes I can be too proud of what I have accomplished and not honest or forthright enough about all the people and institutions that made it possible.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for the reminders. This is a great way to enter the weekend and a message I want to reinforce with our kids over and over again.

From Joan:

One of my favorite passages, from a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. In the wake of the horribly short-sighted decision made by our president yesterday, this seems especially relevant.”

It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality.

Did you ever stop to think that you can’t leave for your job in the morning without being dependent on most of the world? You get up in the morning and go to the bathroom and reach over for the sponge, and that’s handed to you by a Pacific islander.

You reach for a bar of soap, and that’s given to you at the hands of a Frenchman. And then you go into the kitchen to drink your coffee for the morning, and that’s poured into your cup by a South American. And maybe you want tea: that’s poured into your cup by a Chinese.

Or maybe you’re desirous of having cocoa for breakfast, and that’s poured into your cup by a West African. And then you reach over for your toast, and that’s given to you at the hands of an English-speaking farmer, not to mention the baker.

And before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half of the world. This is the way our universe is structured, this is its interrelated quality. We aren’t going to have peace on earth until we recognize this basic fact of the interrelated structure of all reality.”

MY JACKIE

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” Sometimes we get caught up in the impact we’re having on the world, we forget the impact the world is having on us. It’s so easy to forget that we’re standing on the shoulders of the investments of time, love, energy that people have made in us.

So today, #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for the fact that I’m the beneficiary of some amazing people who’ve made an amazing (large or small) impact on me. All of y’all. “Only the mistakes are mine.” (MX). Happy Thursday, people.

DREAMS

A friend reached out on messenger yesterday to share some good news: he’s had a dream of teaching a class at his alma mater, and as of today, he confirmed as an adjunct, for a one year class, on corporate real estate asset management. I’m respecting his anonymity. But it made my day because the guy pivoted his career, focused on doing something bigger than himself, set a new goal (professorship) and pursued it vigorously for four years. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for stories like this. They are motivating and inspiring. Humbling and reorienting. Good things happening to good people? I can never hear enough of those stories. Ever. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful too because the second he said “Corporate Real Estate Asset Management” I asked him if he’d use a Wu Tang song to kick off every class (C.R.E.A.M. amirite?)
