ONE

This is how you turned one. Rough night for you. Rough few days (week?) You woke up crying at 1045. I picked you for the long haul at 1115 after some pick ups and put downs. But you know? It’s all good. You’ve earned it. You have had such an understated year. You were born in the shadow of a job switch and your sister going to school. You were so quiet on our first vacation people wondered where you were.

You moved between nannies while smiling at each and every one. You waited to crawl until nobody was really watching probably because you didn’t want to be a distraction. You moved houses before you moved yourself. You’ve been teething for 8 months and just got a tooth. The sourest demeanor you ever have is cured by taking you outside so you can wave … to everyone. You take meds with a smile (like you take everything else.) You love your sister and let her make you smile like I never knew smiling was possible. You are a momma’s boy. Keep that, homie. It will get you far. Or at least, protect you forever. You have your grandfathers in you (and in your name), linked to them forever (and ever.) You take your time. The more we rush and hustle around you the more you naturally, instinctively, and subtly, humble our pace. You are everything this whole family needed. You are what your mom ordered but what I needed.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for this moment. Some rare QT. And I get to brag that you turned one in my arms. (Note: I put you back in your crib peacefully a second before posting this. You probably woke up and faked some tears so I could have this moment and story to tell.) HBD, Jaanu.

NYC RD 2

More good times in NYC with the fam. Deepal Mami joined us for the Children’s Museum and lunch. Anaiya had a field day with Dora and other exhibits. And Jaan had a blast waving to all of Manhattan…his favorite person to wave to? Still himself though.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for the day and a half we just had in the city and for the personalities our kids keep developing. This guy? I like where he’s headed. Nice way to wave good bye to month 12 and hello to your first birthday!

NYC

A day in the city. The gazillion bubble show. Lunch outside. Time in the park with Ekata Doshi. Thai food for Priya KC Bhatt. A Founder’s KBS find for me. And some really nice friends (who we don’t see nearly enough, or rarely at all) who let’s us crash at their place. Toys were available for the kids (biggest thing) and I didn’t have to spend what was looking like $5-750 on hotel rooms. So the highlight for me was this note from their kids. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful I loved every word of it. I bet you will enjoy it too. They learned how to be good hosts from their folks Amish Barot and Deepa Shah Barot who sent us pages of text messages and instructions and advice on what to do. Here’s to being … spoiled and lucky.

SUCCESS

I’m thinking a lot about teams, teamwork, collaboration, and my role on the various professional and personal teams I’ve been on and am currently on. It’s a function of being a year removed from such an amazing experience LiveIntent and onto an equally extraordinary experience Help Scout. The timing, I mean. Today I read a great ESPN article about Pete Carroll, Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson and it took me back to the first time I had heard of Peter Carroll’s Win Forever Pyramid — whic was after I’d heard of the Pyramid of Trust and perhaps my favorite, John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success. http://fromanativeson.com/…/JohnWoodenPyramid-of…

It resonated. Not only the pyramid and its layers and levels, but his definition of success. “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of being.”

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for all this stuff. I love these models and frameworks and ways of thinking. And these are the kinds of things we all know, but we often forget, which therefore benefits from a not infrequent reminder.

CONTROLLABLE INPUTS

It’s all we have. Dylan Ratigan’s got a great rant about it. I know, because I periodically find myself Googling the idea of inputs vs outputs, and sometimes outputs vs outcomes (but that’s for a different purpose). Controllable inputs. Whether work. Whether family Whether life. It’s easy to get distracted. Something I’ve spent a ton of time on the past few years is focusing on what I can control. And doing my best to collaborate, engage, support, everyone I interact with (personally and professionally) by celebrating the priorities they choose, the actions they pursue, and the effort they put in. When I think of my kids, it’s even more clarifying. I want to focus on what they do, and how they act and operate and think, and not necessarily what they achieve. Because the truth is what you end up achieving is sometimes (and sometimes often) beyond your control — there are external factors that enter the equation of outputs and outcomes. But not … of what you put in. Not of your controllable inputs. So let’s do this. Let’s do this now. Let’s rest and breathe easy and focus on the inputs we control, and commit to making the best of those. Let the world take us where it may. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for all I control, and for the constant daily reminders of the outputs and outcomes I … simply … can’t.

MY GIRL

Got a lot of QT in with this one this weekend. Lots of growing pains this weekend. Lots of tears this weekend. Not a lot of sleep this weekend (nothing like going to bed next to your daughter at 230 in the am only to be woken up with a tap in the shoulder at 4.) But lots of laughs.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for her and all her goofiness. She cracks me up. And she takes care of me. And I adore her in a way I didn’t think was humanly possible.

LOLA

When I hear that word, I first think of an old friend’s grandmother from the Philippines. An esteemed woman. The Secretary of Education under Marcos. I believe she was 85 when I met her, and she looked an acted sharper than I do now at 42. I then think of the song by The Kinks, which I only know as the song “Weird Al” Yankovic used to form Yoda. I prefer Weird Al’s version. But after reading this article in The Atlantic, finally getting to it, I have a third definition. Not slave. Though I should think “slave” I won’t. I will think of my own grandmothers. I will think of immigrant sacrifices. I will think of people who are capable of amazing compassion and love when times are rough. Not times…lifetimes. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful to Alex Tizon (RIP) for his final work. Seems fitting. And for his beautiful summary of how to get to the heart of someone’s story. “Somewhere in the tangle of the subject’s burden and the subject’s desire is your story.” Read this. Make it a point.

ONE

You all read my take on Ed Sheeran and how I love cultures, songs, music, anything, being mashed up. Well #aimgrateful and #iamthankful for Chris Cornell always taking on new music to put his stamp on it. Whether Prince, Bob Marley … or in one of my favorite cases, bringing together U2 and Metallica. He did something to take mashups to a new level with a guitar and a voice that even the best DJs ITW have to appreciate. Enjoy. If you’re a fan of any of the three, I think you’ll know be a fan of all of ’em. Rock in Peace, CC.

SAY HELLO 2 HEAVEN

Happy we got to see you live. I hit a peak level of musical excitement 2x in the past 12 months. First, when I got to see Temple of the Dog. Next when I heard plans of a reunion were brewing. Still one of my favorite albums of all time. I’ll take that concert with me forever. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful … say hello cc. As we say goodbye. (You gotta seek out another road, because this one has ended abrupt.) #nomorebullshit
