HAPPINESS

Very interesting read about happiness, the pursuit of a thing that you believe will bring happiness to you, and finally, knowing when to grit toward it vs to quit pursuing it.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for my first grit vs quit decision. Working exhaustively for a company when I was 25. Managing 4 people, 2 who were twice my age. And watching those two get laid off, cold heartedly. It’s when I learned that an employer/employee relationship is rarely bi-directional.

It’s when I committed to making sure I did my best to make it mutual with my bosses and with the people who worked for me. And I also made it a point to be in tune to grit vs quit. The people around us can unknowingly make it hard for us to find happiness. They have norms. When to get married. How long to work somewhere. What career choices are acceptable. How we raise our kids to believe.

The most important thing in the pursuit of happiness is to ignore someone else’s norms in pursuit of your best choices (while embracing the social contract.) When you make your decisions your choices you have freedom, and therefore, happiness.

For all that this article states (https://www.forbes.com/…/youre-doing-happy-all…/…)

I first learned this lesson academically while reading Viktor Frankl.

If you haven’t read Man’s Search for Meaning, you should. And if you want happiness, ignore what the world does to you and focus on how you respond to it. Truly our last freedom is how we respond to our circumstances. “everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances”.

Life is great folks. Just felt inspired to react to this article that came through a Google Alert this am. 🙂Also, per FB memories and unknowingly, I made a Frankl reference a year ago to this day in a Post. Weird!

NACHOS

I. Love. Nachos. Best in the city? El Vez NYC all day. San Loco on the tail end of a bender. But nobody is perfect. For me the perfect nachos aren’t piled but sorted perfectly side-by-side like a jigsaw puzzle. Perfectly topped with whatever my heart desires on that day from a protein standpoint. Smothered in a balance of quest accents to a mixed peppery cheese blend. One pickled jalapeño per bite. Sour cream squirted on top with a $2 condiments squeeze bottle. Salsa and guacamole on the side with a spoon to dollop each bite. WHOA, I am hungry. Happy Nachos Day, Folks. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for all the nacho memories.

7 YEAR ITCH?

7 years ago today, Priya KC Bhatt and I had our legal wedding ceremony. Intimate with literally only immediate family. Our wedding fell just after Thanksgiving so as a result, we rarely celebrate the big wedding day (we prefer to hang with fam and friends.)

Which is what makes this day so special. It’s been a whirlwind 7 years. Into and out of Charlotte. Into and out of Jersey City. Into and out of a good number of jobs along the way (I definitely carry my weight in one area.) Two, ridiculous kids that fill up the world and make everything good, possible.

But today, after a great weekend with friends, made possible AGAIN by the Family that spoils us rotten, I found myself with an itch that needed to be scratched. I’ve gained weight. Only my hair and patience have thinned. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. But I continue to fly through certain aspects of my life like it is. 7 years ago I promised you, Priya, that I would spend every moment loving you more and making sure each day was happier than the last.

Part of that is how I treat the world. Part of that is making sure I am here and healthy to treat you all like you deserve until the end of time.I woke up this morning and realized that though it’s been a wonderful and incredible 7 years, I need to do more, be better, to live up to my promises so we can live up to our potential. And it had me itching to start on that progress now.

So let’s indulge in our anniversary dinner. And then, with FB as my witness, I am going to scratch the hell out of this itch, and make sure the next 7 years are better than the last 7.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for the last 7 years. #iamfiredup about what’s next.

I love you. You’re hot…on the inside even moreso. 😉

KISS

What a great night. Family taking care of Jaan and Anaiya. Afternoon to evening food and booze thanks to the HBD of an amazing friend who turned 30. < 😉

Also… 10 years to the moment, on the day where Priya KC Bhatt and I met.

#iamgrateful and #iamrhankful for Soniya Babu Sheth’s birthdays and all that her rockstar of a Man Shashank Sheth does to bring her special days to life. Also… my wife is hot. ‘Nuff said.

She’s also the kind of person with skills you don’t eff with. 🙂

YOUTUBE COMMENTS CAN’T BE TRUSTED

How do I know for d@mn sure?

How does this song have even 1 thumbs down, let alone 1,000. Maybe it’s one angry person with 1,000 clicks of revenge?

The Russians even?

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful I can finally objectively prove that YouTube comments are the stuff…of lies and extremely bad taste.

Why am I playing this song?

Someone asked me this week, out of nowhere, what my favorite Fleetwood Mac song was. I took a few moments and about 25 minutes later this song entered my mind.

That was Wednesday at like 2.

It hasn’t left since. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

THIS SCENE

Daredevil. The Punisher.

Yeah, I am behind, but not bad for a guy with two kids. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for Marvel TV. Can’t wait to get to the Defenders after this (probably skipping the fist, Folks.)

But this scene. I am about to go back down and kiss Anaiya goodnight.

LIFE RECALIBRATING

There are days where you feel, meaningful. There are days where you feel, insignificant. I got some career advice/feedback from a friend today.

What I learned, thanks to the impressively humble David Homan is that achievement isn’t a zero sum game, an incredible reminder. Sometimes you can be happy and proud of who you are, while also finding yourself simply in awe of what amazing people can do and make possible.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for the (albeit) short time spent together this evening. To say it was life changing would be accurate but cliche. To say it was life recalibrating is less cliche but just as accurate.

Time for bed. I have a lot of ground to make up tomorrow (and … forever.) 😉

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FOLKS

This and Valentine’s Day, probably my favorite general community Facebook days. For today, I love all the creativity and absolute cuteness. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for every picture shared today. We’re miles away from the super majority of you, but on days like today, the world feels a little smaller in the best of ways.

MONDAY MORNING POV

An excellent primer on the hottest topic of the day (outside of that ball game from…this morning): the Mueller indictments.

Katyal covers the dynamics at play between:> Mueller – admirably independent but easily curtailed if not stopped in his tracks> Rosenstein – with generous power to terminate Mueller based on legal latitude> President Trump – with the constitutional power to terminate Mueller or force Rosenstein to do so> The Congress – who, whether in the majority or minority party, must be informed of said termination

He also covers the difference between constitutional authority and practical, sensical reality (though he uses a universally egregious and idiotic extreme example, PT’s constitutional authority to bomb London now, that everyone disagrees with, to make his point which I think, weakens his narrative.)I thank the just amazing Emily Bazelon for catching and sharing this. I recommend following her as

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for her feed and how much smarter it makes me.

As for Katyal, remember he is the Professor of National Security Law at Georgetown University. Before that he wrote the laws that define the above, and from his bio: “He has served as Acting Solicitor General of the United States, where he argued several major Supreme Court cases involving a variety of issues, such as his successful defense of the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, his victorious defense of former Attorney General John Ashcroft for alleged abuses in the war on terror, his unanimous victory against 8 states who sued the nation’s leading power plants for contributing to global warming, and a variety of other matters.” What saddens me is some of you will see who wrote it and discount this altogether as opposed to learn from and engage with the POV of a person who was instrumental to drafting the framework that set the stage for all those dynamics above.

ALL NIGHT LONG: GTFO

How many of you have been stuck at an airport and complained about it? I was stuck a de Gaulle for 14 hours because of a snowstorm. I hugged my backpack, found my way to an open bench, pitied myself to sleep until restaurants opened for food like 8 hours later. But this woman. Wow. And the folks in the video? Wow.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for the folks out there who really do make lemonade. Mahshid Mazooji runs the world IMHO. Thanks to Mark Andrew Reed for sharing this post. And a tribute to my Lionel Richie fans (heck, the man even Tweeted this with a shoutout to her moonwalk which is legit!) I think of Anu Kiran and Sapna Bhuta McCarthy and Anuja Silady when I hear this song. Without. Fail. Watch the video. See how it feels, yeah!
