SIX MONTHS or WHEN THE BOTTLE PICKS YOU

“Hey Daddy, I had a good day today I think..

It’s been 6 months since you’ve left us. I think we honored your today perhaps better than we ever have. We went out for breakfast. We prioritized family (breakfast, after-dinner). We made time for important, wonderful, old friends (Ami Sanghvi Snehal Patel Mital Sheth Hina Patel Sheth Urvashee Patel @samir patel).

And then we found our way home. To make sure we had ice cream. To make sure we were together. And we stayed up late telling powerful, fun, emotional–a wide range of stories and a wider range of emotions. You’d have loved all of it, and been proud of all we achieved and who we did it for. Life is simple. On a moment by moment basis sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

But in aggregate with the world judging you, you win, when you are supposed to win.

We won today. This bottle. Which I found at a liquor store today.

We won.

The world conspired to get this bottle into our hands and we didn’t waste a moment or a drop of it. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful , and also, #imissyou

We’ll keep sallying forth.

MY DUDE

You are…my dude. My two year old dude. You are clumsy as sin. You are stubborn as hell. You are defiant as humanly possible. And you also have the most incredible laugh, give the most sincere hugs and kisses, have a social awareness that most people never find, and have drunk strength constantly.

You are beloved everywhere you go because that smile (and that hair) and that list for life is inspiring. I’ve heard that your personality is defined and well in hand by age 2. If so, I’m as proud as I can possibly be mostly because I couldn’t be prouder.

You’re my dude. As time moves on I get How this father/son thing goes. You will never copy me. You will react to me. You will see things I do and find ways to do them better. You will see things I do poorly and chart your own course.

But my dude, there are things I do that you’ll never know or see. You’ll only hear about. Those complete the story. Because those happen after the fact. When you can’t react; you can only.

I’m on it. 🙂#iamgrateful and #iamthankful that you carry his name, Jaanu. In your smile, in all your traits, I see his spirit. God bless you, my dude. Thanks for carrying that forward.

GO BIRDS or HUMBLED BY THOUGHTFUL

Dad was the biggest Eagles fan. When you think of the speed bumps his fandom took on the way to becoming what I consider to be their #1 fan, you’d agree. How far he traveled to get here. How many sports he immersed himself in to get here. How much time he gave up to give himself time to watch. A politician’s son from India, to a Sunday afternoon loyalist of all things Eagles.

But that wasn’t all. My Dad may have been the last known adopter of the DVR. Which means all games were scheduled for and around, and All were consumed (not watched, but voraciously consumer) … live.

He died effectively the day the Eagles won their first Super Bowl. It’s cruel. When you consider the evils inflicted upon him. The mythological travails of an Eagles fan for effectively their whole NFL existence. I mean, Richie Kotite alone. And on the doorstep of greatness he took his last breath.

While you live, it’s how you are. But when you’re gone, it’s not how you lived, it’s how you’re remembered. Which is what makes this recent gift so incredible. I have no words for it. I bawl as I write this. Just as I did when I received. Just as my sis did when she saw it. Just as my mom did when we placed both in her lap.

“Thank you for being here with us in spirit to guide our Super Bowl victory. We’re grateful for his presence & the joy it brought your family to celebrate with us. He will be missed!!!”It’s amazing and humbling how many people have kept him and us in their thoughts, prayers, hearts and minds these past few months. I am humbled beyond belief. I feel like I should walk only with my hands clasped, head down, knees bent, and mouth open…“Whispering on repeat, thank you thank you thank you.”

Because thank you. To the friend who did this. I won’t tag you here and now because “it’s not about you” (but it is). I won’t tag you here, now, but we are here for you now and forever. #iamgrateful and #iamthankful for great friends. We all are.

WE ARE BETTER TODAY

An old family friend wrote a great piece on data (“lies, damned lies, and statistics”) and the importance of context. It was an awesome reminder not just for work, but for all the conversations we’re having about where the world stands today. I want to be clear, there is an extraordinary amount of work to be done. I’ll beat that drum, and I’ll live to the beat of that drum for the rest of my life. But context matters. If we don’t stop to realize the progress that has been made, it will be harder to motivate people for the progress that’s yet to be had.

Stronger. What a killer hip hop track. Heard it on my drive back from NYC this evening. House. Disco. Electronica. Lyrical vindication.

#iamgrateful and #iamthankful for songs like this that represent musical genius. Modern adaptation. Fusing genres. An exceptional production and engineering process. Commercially successful. But far reaching. I miss this Kanye. And have no problems saying it?!
